Today’s Music: Howlin’ Wolf and João Gilberto

Bluesman Chester Burnett, better known as Howlin’ Wolf, was born today in 1910 (d. 1976). I’d include a list of all the musicians Wolf influenced, but I don’t feel like typing all day. Just glad I got a chance to see him play live at the now-defunct Mother Blues club on Wells St., Chicago, back in the mid-’60s.

And this live performance, from 1966:

Brazilian guitarist and singer João Gilberto met the world this day in 1931. Here he is with wife Astrud, friend Antonio Carlos Jobim, and sax genius Stan Getz performing their signature classic, “The Girl from Ipanema” which introduced the popular ‘bossa nova’ sound to the US:

Judy Garland was also born on this day in 1922.
