Videos: Romney Says ‘Trust Me’ That He Paid His Taxes — Why Should We?

Romney Claims His Tax Rate Was Never Lower Than 13 Percent

As Ronald Reagan once said: “Trust, but verify.” With Mitt Romney’s record of deceiving the voters of Massachusetts over his place of residence, telling them to ‘trust him’ that he had filed taxes with Mass. as his primary residence so that he could run for governor and, when the returns were released, it turned out he was lying, we should probably verify twice.

Today’s Music: Jimmy Rowles, Ginger Baker, Billy J. Kramer

Jazz pianist Jimmy Rowles was born today in 1918 (d. 1996).

Cream drummer Ginger Baker was born this day in 1939. It’s safe to say his energetic, driving percussion was as much a part of the power trio’s success as the soaring guitar of Eric Clapton or the innovative bass of Jack Bruce.

An early and nearly forgotten part of the ‘British Invasion’ of the early-to-mid ’60s, Billy J. Kramer was born today in 1943.

(UPDATE: What a foul-up! All of these fine people were actually born on August 19th. Sorry for the massive error.)

Today’s Quotes: Jurassicpork, Leslie Savan, LOLGOP

“The cruel and stupid have taken over this country and have plunged us into the real-life prequel of Idiocracy, a movie in which people with IQ’s below 80 are prized and have become the status quo. And the reason why the cruel and stupid have taken over this country and are metastasizing is not because they have a genius for organization but because they’re easy to organize by those who have Machiavellian gifts for exploitation. Because it’s always easier for humans to loathe and hate in large numbers than it is to love in equally large groups.”
— Jurassicpork, “The Most Honest 3 1/2 Minutes of Television,” Welcome Back to Pottersville, July 28, 2012.

“As I wrote of Mitt a few months ago, ‘Bland on the outside, roiling on the inside, he’s almost the definition of passive-aggressive: expressing ‘negative feelings, resentment, and aggression in an unassertive passive way.’ Mitt regularly attacks, lies or infuriates people, all the while professing to be blissfully unaware of any negativity.’”
— Leslie Savan, “What Mitt Romney’s Body Language Is Trying to Tell Us,” The Nation, August 6, 2012.

“I can’t wait to hear if Mitt Romney endorses the part of the Ryan Budget where he loses in a landslide because of it.”
— LOLGOP in a tweet, as seen at Bartcop.com.
