Lower Cognitive Ability Predicts Greater Prejudice Through Right-Wing Ideology and Low Intergroup Contact

Abstract
Despite their important implications for interpersonal behaviors and relations, cognitive abilities have been largely ignored as explanations of prejudice. We proposed and tested mediation models in which lower cognitive ability predicts greater prejudice, an effect mediated through the endorsement of right-wing ideologies (social conservatism, right-wing authoritarianism) and low levels of contact with out-groups. In an analysis of two large-scale, nationally representative United Kingdom data sets (N = 15,874), we found that lower general intelligence (g) in childhood predicts greater racism in adulthood, and this effect was largely mediated via conservative ideology. A secondary analysis of a U.S. data set confirmed a predictive effect of poor abstract-reasoning skills on antihomosexual prejudice, a relation partially mediated by both authoritarianism and low levels of intergroup contact. All analyses controlled for education and socioeconomic status. Our results suggest that cognitive abilities play a critical, albeit underappreciated, role in prejudice. Consequently, we recommend a heightened focus on cognitive ability in research on prejudice and a better integration of cognitive ability into prejudice models.

Today’s Quote: Women Will Defeat the Republicans in 2012

Now that women are getting a good look at the paternalistic ‘War on Women’ Republican plans for them should the GOP get a majority in Congress and the presidency in 2012, I think there will be a blowback against the sexually-repressed paleo-conservative Christopublicans of such dimension it will make the term ‘landslide’ a tepid understatement. There were 70.4 million women voters in 2008; this time around, I think there will be 75 or even 80 million women with the vast majority voting against the knuckle-dragging GOP.

“The 2008 election also suggested that the gender gap will continue to be politically important. About 66% of women voted compared with 62% of men. Neither was statistically different from 2004, but 10 million more women said they voted than did men in 2008—70.4 million women compared with 60.7 million men [131.1 million total].”

Weird People, Feb. 22, 2012

I know, I know — at first glance, I thought it was a page from Mitt Romney’s prep achool yearbook too but, instead, it’s a satire on Ken and Barbie by feralboy12 from Killed By Fish (no relation to this site).

Then there’s this, and we can only hope it isn’t from some ’40’s high school yearbook. (H/T to Bartcop.com.)

Today’s Quotes: Who Said It?

Match the quote with the right name or source. If you’re correct on all of them, give yourself a big pat on the back!

1. “Critics on the right worried that [the president] was a Communist, a socialist or the tool of a … conspiracy. Critics on the left complained his policies didn’t go far enough.”

To which president does the quote refer:

A. Barack Obama
B. Woodrow Wilson
C. Franklin D. Roosevelt
D. Harry S Truman

2. “The idea is that the state doesn’t have rights to limit individuals’ wants and passions. I disagree with that. I think we absolutely have rights because there are consequences to letting people live out whatever wants or passions they desire.”

Who said it?

A. Newt Gingrich
B. Rick Santorum
C. Adolf Hitler
D. Benito Mussolini

3. “On religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God’s name on one’s behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both.”

A. John F. Kennedy
B. Barry Goldwater
C. Bill Clinton
D. Barack Obama

4. “The preservation of the family with many children is a matter of biological concept and national feeling. The family with many children must be preserved … because it is a highly valuable, indispensable part of the … nation. Valuable and indispensable not only because it alone guarantees the maintenance of the population in the future but because it is the strongest basis of national morality and national culture … The preservation of this family form is a necessity of national and cultural politics … it considers unborn life as sacrosanct. For the legalization of abortion is at variance with the function of the family, which is to produce children and would lead to the definite destruction of the family with many children.”

A. Ron Paul newsletter in the 1990s
B. Rick Santorum campaign press release in 2011
C. Family Research Council email in 2009
D. A Nazi newspaper in the 1930s

5. “Men by their constitutions are naturally divided into two parties: 1. Those who fear and distrust the people, and wish to draw all powers from them into the hands of the higher classes. 2. Those who identify themselves with the people, have confidence in them, cherish and consider them as the most honest and safe, although not [always] the most wise depository of the public interests.”

A. John F. Kennedy
B. Thomas Jefferson
C. Franklin D. Roosevelt
D. Dwight D. Eisenhower

6. “The liberal court found Him [Jesus] guilty of false offenses and sentenced Him to death, all because He changed the hearts and minds of men with an army of 12. His death reset the clock of time. Never before and not since has there ever been such a perfect conservative.”

A. Rick Santorum
B. Sarah Palin
C. Rick Perry
D. Herman Cain

7. “Stupid people are ruining America.”

A. Rick Santorum
B. Sarah Palin
C. Rick Perry
D. Herman Cain

Good question, and this chart should be displayed by those against corporate pollution whenever some jackass is spewing the ‘climate change not caused by humans’ drivel.
