Today’s Quote: Lincoln on the Real Issue

“That is the real issue. That is the issue that will continue in this country when these poor tongues of Judge Douglas and myself shall be silent. It is the eternal struggle between these two principles–right and wrong–throughout the world. They are the two principles that have stood face to face from the beginning of time, and will ever continue to struggle. The one is the common right of humanity, and the other the ‘divine right of kings.’ It is the same principle in whatever shape it develops itself. It is the same spirit that says, ‘You work and toil and earn bread, and I’ll eat it.’ No matter in what shape it comes, whether from the mouth of a king, who seeks to bestride the people of his own nation and live by the fruit of their labor, or from one race of men as an apology for enslaving another race, it is the same tyrannical principle….”
— Abraham Lincoln, from a debate with Stephen Douglas, Oct. 15, 1858.

Cartoon: ‘Sinking’ Not ‘Trickling Down’

No ship can stay afloat with 90 percent of the hull sinking to the bottom, a lesson the champagne-sippers giggling at the Wall Street protestors (see video below) have yet to learn. Here, RJ Matson illustrates the situation:

Fats Domino and Leadbelly: Blue Monday Twofer

For a guy who never got up from his piano bench, New Orleans’ own Fats Domino could rock with the best of them and proves it here with his hit “Blue Monday”.  Below that clip, Huddie Ledbetter, AKA ‘Leadbelly,’ accompanied by an unknown harmonica player, is slapping up his 12-string guitar with some “On Monday” blues. Enjoy.

“Goldman Sachs Rules the World,” Says Trader

The future of the global economy seems bleak with the Smart Money betting on complete collapse and cow-eyed diddly-winks like the stock trader in the video below announcing that governments are irrelevant as “Goldman Sachs rules the world.” (One wonders where they think their payoff is going to come from if the system falls apart as it did during the Great Depression and government doesn’t intervene to save the markets.) Maybe Goldman Sachs does rule, for now, but look at the protests on Wall Street and elsewhere — We The People are waking up to the grifters and sleaze merchants who have been ruining our futures and may very well put Big Money in its place before it can destroy what’s left of our democracy and freedom. As Franklin D. Roosevelt said in 1932, “Our Republican leaders tell us economic laws –- sacred, inviolable, unchangeable –- cause panics which no one could prevent. But while they prate of economic laws, men and women are starving. We must lay hold of the fact that economic laws are not made by nature. They are made by human beings.” And Goldman Sachs is just a legal abstraction protected by courts and police paid for by the taxpayers, as are the stock markets they trade in, and they’ve been horribly wrong before. There likely will be a collapse, but, for once, it may only affect the top ten percent while the rest of us get on with our lives.

‘Emoprogs’ Defined

I may disagree with some of what President Obama has done, or the way he did it, but he’s sane and intelligent and I think he’s trying his best to reverse our downward spiral from eight years of Junior Bush, selected by over 400 eminent historians as the Worst President in Our History. Compare the calm and serious Obama to the loopy three-ring circus act the Republicans are putting on for the benefit of the Teabaggers, bigots and religiously-insane on the right. Also consider what the Disaster Crapitalist Madhatter Republicans have done to Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Florida and other states — they are worse than a plague of locusts. Unfortunately, even after all that’s happened just since 2010, there are still some who call themselves progressive who are more angry at Obama than they are at the Republicans, their opinions often based on falsehoods, delusions, misunderstandings or distortions of Obama’s record and the way our system of government works. Those would be the ’emoprogs’ described below.

An Extended Definition Of “Emo Progressive,” And Why It Matters

by Shoq, September 11, 2011

Emo Progressive (or “emoprog”) is a self-described liberal or progressive, often with strong libertarian leanings, whose primary political orientation is to be angry, dissatisfied and unhappy with the state of the nation at any given time, because in their view, liberal policies are not being implemented quickly enough or articulated forcefully enough. They have particular contempt for Democratic presidents.

Emoprogs are ideological purists who disdain compromise and incremental change, which they see as “selling out” classical liberal ideas like full employment, an end to all wars, state secrets, and liberal social policy.

Emoprogs dislike Republicans but reserve their greatest disdain for Democratic presidents, whom they relentlessly attack for not meeting a set of ideological goal posts that are constantly adjusted to ensure that the president will be deemed a disappointment, “not progressive enough” or “just like a Republican” no matter what policy achievements are made.

Emoprogs routinely dismiss or ignore congress’ role in making or impeding policy, believing presidents can simply “use the bully pulpit” and “fight” in order to overcome constitutional or legislative obstacles.

Emoprogs have a strong affinity for third party politics as a way to punish Democratic presidents. They are especially hostile to President Barack Obama and deem anyone who expresses a lack of ill will toward him to be “Obamabots” and enemies of liberalism.

Example 1: After Eric Holder announced congress had blocked the Justice Department from trying 9/11 mastermind KSM in civilian court, social networks lit up with emo progressives complaining that President Obama had broken his campaign promise to end military tribunals. Their criticism did not mention congressional Democrats who helped block Holder.

Example 2: Emoprogs dismissed healthcare reform as a failure, saying President Obama should have used the bully pulpit to achieve a single payer system, despite the fact that Sen. Harry Reid made it clear that such a plan could not pass the Senate.

Video: Every Democrat Should Follow Her Example

Here’s Elizabeth Warren, running for US Senate in Massachusetts against Wall Street Republican puppet Sen. Scott Brown, and clearly defining her campaign in no-nonsense populist terms every Democrat running for any office in the country should emulate. Hedge Fund favorite Brown has raised $10 million to Warren’s $1 million but, in a debate, I think she’d mop up the floor with him. To paraphrase Harry Truman on the corporate Republicans, Elizabeth doesn’t give them Hell; she just tells the truth about them and they think it’s Hell.
