The End is Near for Gaddafi

Rebel forces have entered dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s last stronghold, the Libyan city of Tripoli, arrested one of his sons, and are attacking his compound. One of Gaddafi’s most loyal battalions, the Khamis Khatiba, have surrendered to the rebels as well. According to the AP report below, Gaddafi is not in his compound, leading to suspicion he may have already left the country. I’m glad another Middle East tyrant is apparently biting the dust. Is Syria next?

Today’s Quote-to-Quote: Modern Conservatism

“The radical of one century is the conservative of the next. The radical invents the views. When he has worn them out, the conservative adopts them.”
– Mark Twain

“Conservative: A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from a Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others.”-
– Ambrose Bierce

“A conservative is a fellow who thinks a rich man should have a square deal.”
– Frank Dane

“A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs, who has never learned to walk.”
– Franklin D. Roosevelt

“Some fellows get credit for being conservative when they are only stupid.”
– Kin Hubbard

“To be conservative requires no brains whatsoever. Cabbages, cows and conifers are conservatives, and are so stupid they don’t even know it. All that is basically required is acceptance of what exists.”
– Colin Welch

“Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.”
– John Stuart Mill

“The values to which the conservative appeals are inevitably caricatured by the individuals designated to put them into practice.”
– Harold Rosenberg

“It is fascinating that most white death row inmates in America describe themselves as politically conservative.”
– Richard Sherricky

“Modern conservatives are addicted to the power of money and believe privately-held wealth cures all problems. Well, until they have no money, and then they are at the head of the line demanding liberals save them from their ugly inhumane ideology.”
– Maureen Welles

“The conservative smugly delights in ridiculing liberals who seek to bring about a fairer, more equal existence for all the populace, yet you can’t base a sane, just and democratic nation on any other precept.”
– Harriet Ochs

“Every civilization has died at last not of the excesses of honest and open liberalism, but from the deceptions of jingoistic and corrupt conservatism.”
– Carleton Quinn

Mose Allison Double Dip: ‘Parchman Farm’ and ‘Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy’

For a half century, Mose Allison has defied the usual classifications — he’s blues, jazz, beat poetry, social commentary, what have you — but his mellow vocal style is unmistakable and he’s an impeccable instrumentalist. Never a huge star in any genre, he nevertheless has had a loyal following for generations, influencing a slew of rock, jazz and blues musicians along the way, and it’s been said that, if not for Mose, there would be no Tom Waits. Here are two of his tunes, the early “Parchman Farm” — the first Mose Allison song I ever heard — and the later “Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy.”

Read his bio here and here’s the official website URL.

Today’s Quotes: Rush Limbaugh Unmasked

“Rush [Limbaugh] said that he thought most people are incredibly gullible, and he felt that the key to radio programming was to reach that crowd, and that it would be really, really easy. He thought he could get anyone to believe anything he said, and the more outrageous it was, the more they would believe it.” […]
“I think most of them [Rush’s listeners] are psychotic. I don’t think these people realize he’s just pandering to them for ratings, but if they find out, I wouldn’t want to be there.”
— Elliot Sanders, the St. Louis, MO, music store owner who claimed to have a 3-month-long gay affair with Rush Limbaugh in 1971.

“Suppose slavery still existed in the United States, but the federal government was trying to end it. However Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and so on told their audiences that slavery was a good thing, recognized by the Founding Fathers, endorsed in the Old Testament, the natural order of things, an issue for individual states to decide, protected by an individual’s inalienable right to do what he wanted with his property, and so on. I doubt Abraham Lincoln would find these arguments compelling. But how much trouble do you think the Patriotic Association of Slave Owners would have getting today’s Tea Partiers out to campaign for slavery in America?”
— Dr. Bob Altemeyer, author of “The Authoritarians,” from “Comment on the Tea Party Movement [.pdf file].

“But this Rush-Limbaugh/Fox-News/nationalistic movement isn’t driven by anything noble or principled or even really anything political. If it were, they would have been extra angry and threatening and rebellious during the Bush years instead of complicit and meek and supportive to the point of cult-like adoration. Instead, they’re just basically Republican dead-enders (at least what remains of the regional/extremist GOP), grounded in tribal allegiances that are fueled by their cultural, ethnic and religious identities and by perceived threats to past prerogatives — now spiced with legitimate economic anxiety and an African-American President who, they were continuously warned for the last two years, is a Marxist, Terrorist-sympathizing black nationalist radical who wants to re-distribute their hard-earned money to welfare queens and illegal immigrants (and is now doing exactly that).”
— Glenn Greenwald, “Fox News ‘War Games’ the Coming Civil War,” Salon.com, Feb. 22, 2009.
