Today’s Quote: Actor Will Smith on Trayvon Martin

What If Trayvon Martin Had Been White?

As a ‘thought experiment,’ let’s pretend for a moment that Trayvon Martin was a 150-lbs white kid with Skittles and a can of iced tea shot dead by George Zimmerman, a beefy 250-lbs. full-grown man with a 9mm pistol. In that case, since George Zimmerman’s mother is Hispanic, I can imagine the right-wingers going after him full bore: Conservative sites would be running the photo to the left and asking if anyone believed a skinny teen could take down this bruiser **; Bill O’Reilly would demand that Zimmerman prove he was in this country legally; Rush Limbaugh would snicker that Martin’s shooting was proof that Latinos shouldn’t be allowed to have dangerous weapons; Michelle Malkin would doubt Zimmerman’s story of being assaulted by Trayvon, “Does anyone seriously believe this skinny 17-year-old boy could knock down a 250-lbs. man? I mean really!”; Sean Hannity would be outraged that this ‘Mexican’ isn’t in jail for shooting a white teenager and hint that Zimmerman was in league with La Raza; Free Republic and the other right-wing sites would be exploding with angry vitriol against Zimmerman; Drudge would be relentlessly running headlines such as, “Crazed Hispanic Killer Still Free”; the GOP presidential candidates would be expressing their sympathy for Martin’s parents, noting their boy was gunned down by a vicious Latino thug who misused the ‘Stand Your Ground” law for his own racial revenge; every nook and cranny of Zimmerman’s life would be thoroughly examined for racism against whites, especially since on the 911 tape Zimmerman was heard saying under his breath “fucking honkies,” and Zimmerman’s arrest in 2005 for battery against a white police officer and violently resisting arrest, even though the charges were later dropped, would be the final proof of what a flaky, hateful, racist nutjob this killer was, and Fox News would be continuously demanding his execution for murder. Every Repubican in Congress would be screaming for justice for Trayvon, and the GOP-dominated House would pass a bill calling on the U.S. Attorney General to arrest Zimmerman immediately for a hate crime. That’s what would have happened, in my opinion, if Trayvon Martin had happened to be born white.

And there’s this excerpt, from a black man who, like all black males in America, has had to endure this ‘white fear’ crap since he was a teenager, if not earlier:

During the last week or so, I have spent a good amount of time listening to white folks talk about the shooting of Trayvon Martin. I have talked to friends, been invisible as I sat next to white people at bars and cafes, and eavesdropped on conversations while riding on the bus. I have watched Fox News and lurked on right-wing Web sites to get a fair sense of “real America’s” collective pulse on this issue. I truly care about white people. I am their best friend because I always tell them the truth.

After doing all of this research, I have come to a conclusion that may be a bit upsetting to some of you: Black people are scary. In fact, I have come to realize that as a black man, I am a member of a group that scares white people more than any other in America.

I think we should own this fact. Could it be that the disproportionate coverage we are blessed with by the news media has convinced white America that we are a threat to them? Always suspicious, dangerous and suspect? Is this fear a result of a deeply held, almost primordial belief that still lurks in the collective subconscious and racial id of whiteness: that black men are naturally more vibrant, masculine, dynamic, virile, and athletic than white men?
— Chauncey DeVega, “Face It: Trayvon Martin is Dead Because Many White People Are Afraid of Black People,” AlterNet, March 27, 2012.

In the video below, Stephen Colbert neatly slices and dices the right-wing hogwash being spread on the Trayvon Martin murder.

Today’s Music: John Coltrane, “A Love Supreme” (1965)

I have to admit it took me awhile to be able to listen to and enjoy John Coltrane’s music of the mid-‘60s (and some I still can’t appreciate), but in “A Love Supreme” (released in 1965), Coltrane eases us into his later more frenetic compositions with a sparse background line stripped of ornamentation. Sure, at first much of it sounds like noise, but it’s no more discordant to the ear than what the audiences of the time thought of Béla Bartók’s dissonance. There’s no denying the musical experience and technical proficiency of Coltrane and his band here — Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano, and Jimmy Garrison on bass — and like the best improvisational players, Coltrane gives us plenty to think about as he weaves his occasionally atonal and clashing melodies into a new fabric that transcends the usual musical categories. He was an intense genius a hundred years ahead of his time who burned out in 1967 at age 40 — that means the world has another 50-some years to catch up.

Contrast that with Coltrane’s upbeat, beboppy “Freight Trane” (with Kenny Burrell on guitar), released in 1961:

Today’s Video: Joe Friday on Right-Wing Groups and Fascism

Yep, Dragnet’s Det. Joe Friday (as played by Jack Webb) was as Republican conservative as they came in the 1960s, but even he knew the difference between the nutcases and the true conservatives. That distinction, unfortunately, has been lost by today’s version of Republican conservatism. Now the nutcases run the show and the sane conservatives are all but in hiding.

Today’s Music: Fats Waller & Art Tatum, “Georgia On My Mind” (1941)

You’ve heard Ray Charles’ great vocal version, but here a couple of other geniuses take a crack at Hoagy Carmichael’s 1930 melody instrumentally. Fats (Thomas Wright) Waller is first, followed by Art Tatum, and I’ve plum run out of superlatives for both of them. Just listen and you’ll see what I mean.

Weird Pix for March 27, 2012

1. Yes, it’s none other than the beloved Ed Sullivan, listening to the World’s Greatest Music on the World’s Crappiest Portable Record Player. It looks like Ed’s thinking, “How did I ever get talked into this goddamned thing? I don’t know shit about music!”

2. I’d like a Frank Zappa ‘Toaster Poot’ — but without the obviously rabid raccoons.

3. Isn’t that nice, Taylor Swift got one of those stupid Vermont bears for Valentine’s Day, apparently with a useful attachment.

4. Don’t think this might not be a reality some day soon.

5. The nagging, insoluble problem of anarchy illustrated.

6. Probably not real, but it qualifies as weird. A 45 RPM record in 2012? That would be Romney’s speed.

The Shameless Smearing of Trayvon Martin Begins

Why some righties want to defend nutjob George Zimmerman is beyond me, but the typical right ‘smear the victim’ campaign has started. Here, Zimmerman’s lawyer says he was attacked and beaten by Trayvon and sustained a broken nose — gee, if that’s true, why didn’t Zimmerman immediately go to the hospital for treatment and he’d have forensic evidence of such an attack?

Craig Sonner, the attorney for George Zimmerman, revealed a new allegation into the Trayvon Martin case Friday evening that, claiming his client suffered injuries at the hands of the slain 17-year-old.

In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Sonner was asked if he could identify any injuries Zimmerman suffered on the night he shot and killed Martin. Sonner said that he believed Zimmerman’s nose was broken and that the back of his head also had lacerations before describing what his client told him.

“Well, it was an injury done by Trayvon Martin,” he said.
— Andrew Jones, “Zimmerman’s lawyer: Trayvon Martin broke my client’s nose,” Raw Story, March 14, 2012.

When reading this, keep in mind that originally Zimmerman told the police “he had stepped out of his truck to check the name of the street he was on when Trayvon attacked him from behind as he walked back to his truck.” Perhaps realizing that was a pretty lame excuse considering he patrolled the area constantly, he has apparently dropped that reason for leaving his car. Why did he get out of his truck after reporting the ‘suspicious character’ to the police? Who knows — maybe he couldn’t get good aim from inside the vehicle.

George Zimmerman, the [self-appointed] neighborhood watch crime captain who shot dead 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, originally told police in a written statement that Martin knocked him down with a punch to the nose, repeatedly slammed his head on the ground and tried to take his gun, a police source told ABC News.

Zimmerman had claimed he had called police about Martin, whom he found suspicious, then went back to his car when Martin attacked him, punching him.
— Matt Gutman, “Trayvon Martin Shooter Told Cops Teenager Went For His Gun,” ABC News, March 26, 2012.

Then there are the new allegations that Trayvon was suspended from school for having an ’empty baggy’ of marijuana. (If it was empty, how do you know it contained marijuana? Did the school do a microscopic drug test on the bag?) Moreover, even if Trayvon smoked pot, what difference does that make, except he would tend to be less prone to violence? Oh, yeah — in the right-wing Universe of Fear it means he deserves to die because he’s a young black male junkie.

Meanwhile, you won’t hear Trayvon’s smearers bring up the much more important info that Zimmerman was arrested in July of 2005 for battery of a police officer and violently resisting arrest, the charges later dropped. You can bet if Trayvon had been arrested on such charges, it would be blared across Fox News like the Second Coming.
