Today’s Quotes: You Are Right to Be Indignant

The tax plan of every prominent Republican candidate for president would raise taxes on everyone but the wealthiest Americans, yet they continue to peddle this offal and, apparently, the GOP base is buying it. Outside of that minority of cretins and racists, however, the OWS Movement is gaining ground as Americans start coming to their senses — they not only have a right to be indignant, but an obligation to the future to change this broken ‘reverse Robin Hood’ system.

What sort of person? This sort of person:

Mitt Romney: Romney’s tax plan includes a $6.6 TRILLION giveaway to corporations and the wealthiest Americans. Meanwhile, Romney’s Medicaid cuts are even more draconian than the ones in [the] Paul Ryan plan. Both of their plans … also end Medicare, naturally.
Rick Perry: Perry’s tax plan would not only lower income taxes on the wealthy, it would also completely eliminate taxes on capital gains and dividends (currently taxed at 15 percent). In other words, Perry would dramatically expand the loophole that already allows millionaires (like Mitt Romney) and billionaires to pay a lower tax rate than many middle class Americans. When asked [about] this egregious giveaway to the wealthy, Perry responded: ‘I don’t care about that.’ In addition, Perry’s plan also embraces the privatization of Social Security (a program he has referred to in the past as an unconstitutional ‘Ponzi scheme’ that is a ‘monstrous lie‘).”

Occupy Our Food

I’m glad the OWS Movement is addressing one of the most pernicious aspects of the corporate takeover of America — implanting in our food dubious substances such as High Fructose Corn Syrup, additives such as Bovine Growth Hormone, incidental chemicals like antibiotics given to animals which then can have dire consequences for human health, and, most dangerously, genetically modified (GM) crop seeds that are designed not to regenerate so the farmer must buy new seeds every year. Fortunately, Sweden has a vault of ‘heritage’ seeds in case the GM crops start mutating and dying off before they bear fruit or vegetables, a distinct possibility since the science of genetic crop modification is fairly new and little tested, and Big Agra rushed all of this into the planting cycle to maximize profit. (Already, GM crops have failed to deliver on the manufacturer’s promises.) Even after more than a decade, we still don’t know what long-term effects this Frankenfood will have on our bodies. One thing’s sure: most people won’t buy this mutant, chemically-treated food if they are aware of its properties. That’s why the big food corporations have been fighting so hard to keep this info off of food product labels. Read on:

Here Are Ways You Can Help the OWS Movement

Despite the best (or worst) propaganda efforts of the Usual Suspects On the Right — Fox News, Andrew Breitbart, et al — the Occupy or OWS Movement is growing by leaps and bounds, to the point where it’s even scared the authoritarian Communist regime that rules China. Not since the civil rights and antiwar movements of the ’60s have protests had this much impact on American society with one important difference — this time around the majority of the people are on the side of the protestors from the outset. Already the OWS Movement has changed the rhetoric of the MSM; now the Talking Heads are talking about jobs and holding Wall Street accountable instead of cutting Social Security and shared sacrifice (except for the wealthy). Quite an accomplishment for a movement that a month ago was almost totally ignored by the mass media. Read below for ways you can get involved:

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED: There are a number of ways that Americans can get involved with the 99 Percent Movement. One way is to donate to the various occupations to help them continue to provide food, shelter, and other necessary equipment. See Occupy Wall Street’s donation page here. Another way is to join the occupations and protest yourself. Occupation groups are using Meetup.com to map out protests and there are currently 2262 groups on the sub-site, which is being dubbed “Occupy Together.” Lastly, you can simply tell your story of how the economy has failed to work for you or your family. The “We Are The 99 Percent” Tumblr already has more than 2,000 submissions, and welcomes new additions.”

Nov. 5th is Both National Bank Transfer Day and Operation FOX Hunt Day

November 5, 2011 is going to be a busy day with people all over the country switching their accounts from the big national banks to credit unions and now Anonymous has vowed to bring down Fox News for their comments regarding the OWS protests with Operation FOX Hunt Day. I’m not sure I agree with the cyber attacks but if any organization deserves it, that would be Fox News for their years of slime and propaganda serving the top 1 percent at the expense of the other 99. Meanwhile, Fox owner Rupert Murdoch himself is having problems with his News Corp. shareholders — they want him out following the burgeoning scandals he and his family have visited upon their investment. It’s even possible son James Murdoch could end up in jail. If Rupert goes, I think it’s a safe assumption that Roger Ailes, the bitter paranoid Nixonite behind Fox News’ right-wing programming, would be gone, as well. It’s conceivable that by next year we could see a ‘kinder, gentler’ Fox with the worst miscreants such as Sean Hannity gone from the line-up.

Rupert Murdoch: News Corp’s great dictator on the brink

He was as combative, up against it and past his prime as 2011’s other fallen tyrants. This was likely his last shareholders’ meeting

What Do Miss USA Contestants Have to Say On the Important Questions of the Day?

Not that it matters; beauty contests are mostly irrelevant and asking ‘weighty’ questions of the contestants is just a respectable cover for the pageant’s real mission of featuring young women parading around in swim suits and high heels. The first video here, asking if math should be taught in schools, is likely a spoof, although some claim it’s legitimate. The second video asking whether evolution should be taught in schools is depressingly real. BTW, the contestant from Maryland in the ‘evolution’ video, 23-year-old Allyn Rose, I’m almost sure is older than 23 and once made porn films under the pseudonym ‘Vera Vage,’ and don’t ask me how I know that.

11 Facts You Need To Know About The Nation’s Biggest Banks

Here’s an excerpt from the Think Progress piece by Pat Garofalo, but follow the link below and read the whole article.

11 Facts You Need To Know About The Nation’s Biggest Banks

Pat Garofalo

[…] Here are eleven facts that you need to know about the nation’s biggest banks:

– Bank profits are highest since before the recession…: According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., bank profits in the first quarter of this year were “the best for the industry since the $36.8 billion earned in the second quarter of 2007.” JP Morgan Chase is currently pulling in record profits.

– …even as the banks plan thousands of layoffs: Banks, including Bank of America, Barclays, Goldman Sachs, and Credit Suisse, are planning to lay off tens of thousands of workers.

– Banks make nearly one-third of total corporate profits: The financial sector accounts for about 30 percent of total corporate profits, which is actually down from before the financial crisis, when they made closer to 40 percent.

– Since 2008, the biggest banks have gotten bigger: Due to the failure of small competitors and mergers facilitated during the 2008 crisis, the nation’s biggest banks — including Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, and Wells Fargo — are now bigger than they were pre-recession. Pre-crisis, the four biggest banks held 32 percent of total deposits; now they hold nearly 40 percent.

– The four biggest banks issue 50 percent of mortgages and 66 percent of credit cards: Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Citigroup issue one out of every two mortgages and nearly two out of every three credit cards in America.

– The 10 biggest banks hold 60 percent of bank assets: In the 1980s, the 10 biggest banks controlled 22 percent of total bank assets. Today, they control 60 percent.

– The six biggest banks hold assets equal to 63 percent of the country’s GDP: In 1995, the six biggest banks in the country held assets equal to about 17 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product. Now their assets equal 63 percent of GDP.

– The five biggest banks hold 95 percent of derivatives: Nearly the entire market in derivatives — the credit instruments that helped blow up some of the nation’s biggest banks as well as mega-insurer AIG — is dominated by just five firms: JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citibank, and Wells Fargo.

– Banks cost households nearly $20 trillion in wealth: Almost $20 trillion in wealth was destroyed by the Great Recession, and total family wealth is still down “$12.8 trillion (in 2011 dollars) from June 2007 — its last peak.”

– Big banks don’t lend to small businesses: The New Rules Project notes that the country’s 20 biggest banks “devote only 18 percent of their commercial loan portfolios to small business.”

– Big banks paid 5,000 bonuses of at least $1 million in 2008: According to the New York Attorney General’s office, “nine of the financial firms that were among the largest recipients of federal bailout money paid about 5,000 of their traders and bankers bonuses of more than $1 million apiece for 2008.”
